TLDR: The practice of enabling change in an enterprise by defining needs and recommending solutions to deliver value to stakeholders.
6 core concepts are:
Change - the act of transformation in response to a need
Example: The support team needs to learn how to use the new software. Are they ready? If not, they need to be skilled appropriately.
Need - a problem or opportunity to be addressed
Example:
An organization is receiving a lot of complaints from customers about the after-sales support provided. So, the organization has a need to address the problem.
Solution - a specific way of satisfying one or more needs in a context
Example:
To address the need for resolving poor after-sales service, the organisation may use a software application.
Context - the set of circumstances influencing and influenced by the change.
Contexts / Factors include
- Attitudes,
- behaviors,
- beliefs,
- competitors,
- culture,
- demographics,
- goals,
- governments,
- infrastructure,
- languages,
- losses,
- processes,
- products,
- projects,
- sales,
- seasons,
- terminology,
- technology,
- weather
Stakeholder - a group or individual with a relationship to the change, need, or solution
- Business Analyst
- Customer
- Domain subject matter expert
- End-user
- Implementation subject matter expert
- Operational support
- Project manager
- Regulator
- Sponsor
- Supplier
- Tester
Value - the worth or usefulness of something to a stakeholder within a context. Can be tangible or intangible, potential or realized.
Example:
By implementing a CRM solution to address the after-sales support issues, the organisation wants to keep the customers happy so that they can refer more customers.
The key relationships are:
- Needs drive changes, which implement solutions to deliver value to stakeholders
- Contexts influence and are influenced by changes, needs, and solutions
- Stakeholders have relationships with the other concepts and are motivated by value
Assumptions
- These concepts are interdependent and cannot be fully understood in isolation.
- No single concept is more important than another.
- This model provides a common vocabulary for understanding any business analysis task.
